4) Mock Rub Maker
Use the specially designed straight edge to make mock
rubs on smooth bark trees one to five inches in diameter. Place your mock rubs
in zones that bucks have rubbed in the past. The rub maker portion of the
Scrapemaker will rip smooth bark and leave the strips of bark hanging off the tree just like a lifelike rub. By doing this you will be able to
get the attention of other bucks and perhaps keep them a little closer to your
stand location. This is extremely effective for scouting purposes. Just like
mock scrapes, mock rubs can entice bucks to re-rub a tree or make another rub
close to the mock rub. Bucks do this to warn their competition that a fight
might break out if the two bucks meet. Mock rubs work best in travel corridors
between bedding sights and feed zones. Whitetail Innovators recommends placing a
couple of good rubs on trees within ten yards of the scrape sight. This is very effective in
visually stimulating the buck as he approaches the scrape site.
For many years hunters thought that bucks rubbed trees only to
get the velvet off of their antlers. Although this is true, it is not the primary
reason for rubs. We have found that a buck, while making a visual cue to his
competition, is also leaving his forehead scent on the rub which also
personalizes his work. Because of this, Whitetail Innovators have included the
Mock Rub Scent that should be used every time a mock rub is made.
