The 4-in-1 Scrapemaker is the next "must have" for the
whitetail deer hunter. The kit comes complete with a DVD and a step-by-step
process of how to use the tool and scents to communicate through scrapes and
rubs. Whitetail Innovators
recommends the use of the Scentlok products to keep your human scent out of the
equation. A real scrape consists of a
licking limb, an oval shaped pawed up area directly under the licking limb,
a hoof print in the middle of the scrape, and an actual scent a deer leaves
behind when making the scrape. The buck scrape is considered to be the most
important part of the whitetail breeding cycle. A buck will make a scrape to
let other bucks know that this is his territory, but the main purpose is to
give the female deer (doe) a chance to urinate in his scrape. The doe leaves
her scent in the scrape and when the buck comes back to scrape he can smell
a hot doe and pick up her trail. It is important for a buck to find the doe
while she is capable of being bred during her 36 hour period of ovulation.
This makes it imperative for the buck to find the doe quickly. Whitetail
make scrapes all times of the year as a way to mark their territory, but as
the rut approaches these scrapes become a hunters best friend.
Buck rubs are another key ingredient of a
deer's life. Usually, a buck will find a tree from one to five inches in
diameter and rub his antler's on it until the bark comes off the tree to mark
his territory. Bucks make rubs in highly visible areas, so that other deer may
see them and know they are approaching another buck's zone. Biologists have
found that a buck is actually leaving his forehead scent on the rub which helps
him advertise his domain through visual signs and distinct scent.
